PUESTOS
isaak broder
In Spanish, the term PUESTOS refers to a street stand, a small shop, a modest point of sale where one can find all kinds of goods, from food to underwear. In Mexico, these stands are a fundamental part of popular culture. During several stays in Mexico City, the German photographer Isaak Broder focused on their minimal, functional and inventive structure. This series of photographs highlights the variety of this modest piece of architecture, which bears witness to everyday life in Mexico City from the inside.
In recent years, the Mexican government has increasingly encouraged street stall owners to "normalise" their activity. One politician was able to state that "it is a question of order, discipline and improving the urban image". The freedom to design the shape and colour or even the labelling will be restricted, there is a will from the authorities to impose a form of standardisation.
The book PUESTOS is an attempt to show the survival of the expression of a popular culture inscribed in the city, and threatened with disappearance.
